How much sample do you need to run a test?

A - NewGene routinely extracts DNA from clinical samples of blood, formalin fixed paraffin embedded (FFPE) tissue and cell pellets. For the specific requirements of your test, please see the relevant webpage.

  • FFPE material with a minimum tumour content of 30%. Samples can be received as either the fixed block or 5 x 10 m curls
  • Cytology samples: FFPE cell blocks, as above, fixed cell pellet and other fluids and slide mounted material
  • 4.5ml EDTA blood
  • Samples can also be received as DNA
    • For next generation sequencing 4g of DNA suspended in TE buffer at a concentration of 50ng/l
    • For genotyping on the Agena MassARRAY 1g for targeted mutations

Who can request a clinical test?

A - In order to ensure that appropriate counselling, support and interpretation are in place referrals can only be accepted from a clinician. NewGene is unable to accept direct patient referrals.

How to I make a clinical referral?

A - The referral forms for all tests can be found on the download section of the NewGene website. Please send the sample and the completed referral form to the address provided. For more information on the appropriate sample type please see the relevant section of the website.

Do you provide tests to Overseas Customers?

A - NewGene is happy to provide its service to overseas healthcare providers - if you are interested in accessing NewGene tests from overseas please get in touch through the address.

How will my work be reported?

A - Where clinical tests are provided directly by NewGene a formal report will be provided by our State Registered Clinical Scientists within the appropriate turn around time. Paper copies will be sent to the referring Clinician or Pathologist. A copy may also be sent via secure e-mail by arrangement.

For clinical tests that NewGene provide in collaboration with NHS Trusts the report may be issued by the collaborating Trust.


A - For information on pricing please contact NewGene through the address. All clinical tests are exempt from VAT.

How do I pay for a test?

A - NHS – Invoices will be sent to the appropriate hospital, NHS Trust or Clinical Commissioning Group.

Private and Overseas Customers – Pre-payment is normally required on overseas clinical tests, details will be provided on request.
